Dog Hair and Dralon Yarn

Dog Hair and Dralon Yarn

Yes, yarn can be made from dog hair. This specialty yarn is made from the soft undercoat of breeds such as samoyed (shown on the bottom), husky (shown in the picture to the left), chow and golden retriever. Although some spinners only use dog hair, I prefer to blend the hair with wool for several reasons. The first being that blended with the wool, the dog hair does not ’shed out’ of the finished project. The second is that by itself, dog hair has no elasticity. When blended with the wool it makes great outer wear … hats, mittens, scarves … and also works on cuffs and waistbands. Dog hair yarn is also good for felting and makes a nice tight fabric. Check  my previous blog: http://www.three-stitchers.com/wordpress/2009/03/dog-hair-for-spinning-faqs/ on how to prepare the wool from your favorite pet.

Dralon is a synthetic fiber developed after World War II. 21’st century milling techniques have made it earth friendly and softer than ever. In the commercial world, it is used for uphholstery by such brand names as Disney, Nike and Warner Brothers. In the hand knitting world it is under the name ‘courtelle’ and ‘acrylic’. Universal Yarn carries a ruffeling yarn called Tango that has an anti-microbial agent in it is as well.

Look for both of the these yarns on my eBay site.
